When the days begin to grow shorter, sometimes the idea of staying inside more – with shorter periods of sunshine – doesn’t sound good. Especially knowing that Covid-19 and socially distancing is still with us.

What can you do to keep your spirits up? It really is all about attitude. Here are some ways to change your thinking and stay focused on what’s positive as we head into the fall.

  1. Change your script

You know how you prefer this day, this meeting, this dinner, or even this month, to unfold. So write your own script. Begin each day thinking through how you want it to go. Your brain loves a good direction so make sure it comes from you.

  1. Embrace plot twists

Negativity only breeds more negativity. It is a happiness riptide, carrying carry you away from health and happiness. Greet unexpected changes and challenges in your day with “why not?” Welcome different routes, new characters, and un-tested ideas.

  1. Minimize expectations

Unmet expectations are at the root of most of unhappiness in life. But only you know what you expect. Minimize your expectations from others to maximize your happiness.

  1. Do something bold every day

Every single time you are offered a choice that involves greater risk than doing what’s known and safe, do it. Sure, it might not always pan out. But you will be more energized and happy when you live boldly.


5. Your lawn is as green as it needs to be

Teddy Roosevelt once said: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” He was right. The lawn isn’t really any greener on the other side. Be content with what you already have. And already are.

Frozen had the right idea. You will always have some regrets and doubts about your decisions and others. Put it in perspective and move on.

Guard your time closely. Don’t say “yes” to everything

8. Be a giver

Say a kind word. Encourage someone. Pay a visit to someone who is alone. There are givers and there are takers. Givers are happy. Takers are miserable. Decide which you are.
